New Proposal to Change HOS

Hours of service is a set of rules and regulations put in place by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration which is a part of the United States Department of Transportation. Hours of service determine how long you may drive to reduce the possibility of driving while fatigued. This particular set of regulations are in place to ensure the safety of drivers who operate commercial motor vehicles.

Hours of service rules place specific limits on the length of time you can drive and how many total hours you can work or be behind the wheel. As the driver of a commercial motor vehicle it is your responsibility to not only stay awake and alert while driving but stay updated on hours of service rules and regulations.

Recently, the FMCSA asked industry stakeholders what changes they would like to see made to current hours of service regulations. While no specific changes have been identified to the public, it is still a lengthy process, but the U.S. Department of Transportation announced that the formal proposal for changes will come in early June. The organization also noted there will be an opportunity for public comments regarding the updates that will last roughly 50 days. Upon publication of the proposed changes and public comments, the FMCSA then will decide whether to move forward or if further revisions need to be made.
